So there's this Japanese program that I like, called Tonari no Bangohan. It's not anything special, no stunning effects by visionary directors and certainly no epic scripts or nuanced performances. It's a reality show in the best sense. The host, who is famous for doing this, finds a random house and announces:
Tonari no Bangohan | 突撃!隣の晩ごはん
He promptly invites himself into the house to the shock of unsuspecting homeowners, who immediately recognize him and the show he represents. The embarrassed people are all but forced to show him what they're preparing, or what their currently eating for dinner. He then eats their food.
That's it.
What I find most interesting is that this is an unfiltered look at your average rural-ish Japanese household. Most often these folks are a bit more rural, perhaps because they're more accepting of strangers. My wife says that the host would find it difficult to pull the same routine in a city apartment because folks would be far less accommodating.
